Seven Sorrows and Joys

  1. Joseph's Dream. The Sorrow of breaking his engagement to Mary and the joy, when in a dream an angel reveals to him the mystery of the incarnation. The upper part of the window shows a vision of the Annunciation.

  2. The Nativity. The sorrow of seeing Jesus born in a stable and the joy of hearing the choirs of angels singing the glory of the Messiah.

  3. The Circumcision. The sorrow of submitting Jesus to the pains of the circumcision and the joy of having the honor of giving Him the name Jesus (Savior). The initials "IHS" on the lower right side stand for "Jesus, the savior of all men."

  4. The Prophecy of Simeon. The sorrow of hearing the prophecy of Simeon fortelling the suffering of Jesus and Mary and the joy derived from the knowledge that these sufferings would merit the salvation of all mankind.

  5. The Flight into Egypt. The sorrow of having to flee into Egypt and the joy of seeing the fall of the pagan idols at the passage of the Messiah.

  6. The Holy Family at Nazareth. The sorrow, on his return from Egypt, of finding the cruel Archelaus as King of Judea and the joy brought by the angel with the announcement of returning to Nazareth.

  7. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple. The sorrow of losing Jesus and the joy of finding Him among the doctors of the Law in the Temple of Jerusalem.
